Kinja'd!!!

I should buy an electric bicycle.

Why?

It would work for my commute, and I could use the money I save not buying fuel for Volvo parts.

A bus also works for your commute, and the bike costs the same as several years of bus fares.

Håll käften.

Here is one that costs as much as your Volvo.

This is exactly the kind of using your power for evil I endorse.

What do you recommend, and is it cheaper or more expensive than a Zero S?

After almost never riding the bus the first 20 years of living in DC, I started taking the bus regularly a few years ago and find it to be a nice supplement to trains, driving, walking, and bike shares. It’s cheap, it goes everywhere and it runs all night on major thoroughfares.

With that said, it will be a VERY long time before I get on a bus again. Probably not until there’s a vaccine or some active measure you can take to prevent infection.

Theyre also impossible to find due to the Rona. I know my local trek store says their ebikes are backordered a few months out

Riding a bike exposure to other people < riding a bus exposure to other people

So that’s a win for the bike even pre-pandemic

I think the equation is incomplete. You didn’t factor in the risk of catching COVID and the lowered health costs for getting *some* exercise by sitting on a bicycle as it propels you down the street.

I had a really, really long commute for a few years. It was 80 miles one-way. I thought I could save some money by buying a car that was more fuel efficient than my truck. My mom, the accountant, encouraged me to set up a spreadsheet to figure out just how much I would save. I realized that it would take years before I would see any savings mostly because the truck was already paid off . I kept driving the truck.

Buy a normal bike and get some actual physical benefit

Alternate view, at the end of those several years, you would still own the bike but wouldn’t own the bus

That’s e asy enough, just bring especially malodorous lunches. Maybe something with Camembert and sardines. To drink, I have a bottle of Scotch whiskey that smells alarmingly similar to paint thinner, or alternatively there’s tequila.

Rattan Makes a nice folding E bike with 100 miles of range.  Starts at $700 USD. but most stock is priced around $1300 USD.

Depends on whether you’re willing to diy or not. If you are you’ll likely end up with a better bike than the big names and for a whole lot less coin.

I’d start by sourcing a used full suspension mtb from a quality brand. Then decide if you want to go hub or mid drive (hubs are easier to build and live with, usually silent, less drivetrain wear. Mids are better for steep climbing but are noisier and cause accellerated drivetrain wear.) Pick your poison and get a kit that includes everything but the bike and battery. For that buy quality, avoid the ebay/amazon/aliexpress specials. (A potted Luna Shark Pack might be a good choice there). Don't forget to get a charger as well.

Grin Tech are great to deal with:

https://www.ebikes.ca

Luna Cycle is less great to deal with, but a decent option:

https://lunacycle.com

Literally anything you could ever want to know can be found here:

https://endless-sphere.com/forums

If you go mid I’d probably lean towards the BBS HD, especially for a first timer. I’d personally go for a CYC X1 Pro if going that route, but it’s an exercise in overkill. I have a bigly wigly hub on mine and love it fwiw.

If you don’t want to diy and don’t want to spend Specialized money people seem to largely like Rad Power bikes. They’re china-specials but are vetted by Rad so you’ll likely have better luck than the crap shoot that is craigslist/amazon/aliexpress turnkey bikes.

Do it! It’s fun!

Ride a human powered bike to work , and b ring a towel and change of clothes. Should be doable as long as the trip is 10 miles or less

This make me want to build an e-bike.

Even crazier idea: build my own recumbent e-bike.  For reasons.

A electric tadpole trike is on my to do list. I’d love to build an electric velomobile one of these days. The donor bike prices are bananas though.

I've come close to picking up a Sun Cycle or a Bike-E before, but never pulled the trigger. All considered if riding in traffic is the plan a semi-recumbent might be the best bet. Better aero than upright, but not so low to the ground as to be completely invisible to motorists.

W e have a bunch of those things out here, even more since the pandemic hit. I agree, logically they don’t make a lot of sense, but I get the feeling folks just like to play with them, ride around anywhere they want to go on an electric motorbike ‘cause it’s fun. We were out walking a few weeks ago and got passed by a guy one one of the fat tired ones - he had to be pushing 80 - and he was having a great time.

Personally I’d not buy a folder unless I absolutely needed one. Especially an electric one. For a number of reasons. That hinge tends to become a weak spot, they usually have small wheels which aren’t great at any real speed, concessions are often made in the name of portability which effect r idability, many are packed with proprietary parts... Though I haven't looked at the one you mentioned specifically.
